Young Farmers Newfoundland and Labrador

Background

NL Young Farmers (NLYF), in partnership with the NL Federation of Agriculture, has undertaken a project to develop our organization and further the goals of young farmers in the province. The goal of the Young Farmers initiative is to increase visibility of the NLYF and enhance the opportunities for young people in agriculture.

While the NL Young Farmers has a high membership level, active engagement with members is low.

 

Goal

By March 31, 2026, NL Young Farmers will have increased engagement with young farmers, new entrants, industry organizations and other stakeholders.

 

Key Indicators of Success

  • Increased active participation to 75% engagement

  • Analysis of current engagement

  • Industry representation at the steering committee level

  • Being invited to the right tables

  • Connection to other organizations with a link to their strategic directions

 

Objective Year One

By March 31, 2024, NL Young Farmers will have a complete analysis of current levels of engagement.

 

Key Indicators of Success

  • Updated membership list

  • Developed an engagement tracking process

  • Developed an evaluation process

Objective Year Two

By March 31, 2025, NL Young Farmers will have an increased representation of commodity and industry groups at the steering committee level.

 

Objective Year Three

By March 31, 2026, NL Young Farmers will have increased active participation to 75% engagement.

Strategic Direction Two

There is a perceived lack of value and relevance of being part of NL Young Farmers.  Additionally, there is a lack of connection between being a member of NLYF and the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture.

Goal

By March 31, 2026, NL Young Farmers will have retained and attracted new members by providing value relevant to the young farmer of today.

 

Key Indicators of Success

  • Increased membership

  • Increased number of new entrants

  • Accurate picture of how many members are engaged in farming, in what commodity, and in what region of the province

  • Consistent value messaging developed

  • Branding refresh

Objective Year One

By March 31, 2024, NL Young Farmers will have engaged with young farmers to identify barriers, challenges and needs.

Key Indicators of Success

  • Training needs assessment

  • Accurate picture of current membership

  • Clear understanding of desired value and relevance

  • Identified desired methods of engagement

  • Tracked number of members reached

Objective Year Two

By March 31, 2025, NL Young Farmers will have developed and communicated consistent messaging to current and potential members demonstrating the value and relevance of NLYF.

Objective Year Three

By March 31, 2026, NL Young Farmers will have increased membership by expanding reach.

The NL Young Farmers provides a unique opportunity for young farmers to connect with other young farmers, and experienced farmers during learning and networking events.

By March 31, 2026, NL Young Farmers will have developed and delivered effective and relevant learning and networking opportunities to its membership.

  • Review of existing resources

  • Development of new resources

  • Increased number of mentor/mentee relationships

  • Increased promotion of mentorship program

  • Increased number of informal and formal learning and networking opportunities

 

Objective Year One

By March 31, 2024, NL Young Farmers will have reviewed existing learning resources, updated resources with current information, and identified new learning resources needed.

 

Key Indicators of Success

  • Review completed

  • Resources mapped to match young farmers’ needs

 

Objective Year Two

By March 31, 2025, NL Young Farmers will have promoted the mentorship program and increased matches.

 

Objective Year Three

By March 31, 2026, NL Young Farmers will have increased the number of learning and networking opportunities offered to young farmers.
