PRESS RELEASES

NL Young Farmers Leadership Summit to take place in Deer Lake, NL.

NL Young Farmers will host its 11th annual Leadership Summit October 18 and 19 at the Deer Lake Motel, Deer Lake. The annual Leadership Summit is an excellent opportunity for young farmers to meet and network with like-minded people, government representatives, guest presenters and other agricultural stakeholders. About 65 delegates, including young farmers, government representatives and other industry stakeholders are expected to attend.

The theme for this year’s summit is The Cost of Farming. The event will include a variety of workshops and presentations covering topics including Business Planning, Land Acquisition, Financing and Funding, Farm Business Marketing and more. Keynote speaker Dan Rubin, Author and Founding Chair of the Food Producers Forum will speak about the importance of Community Collaboration. A panel of young farmers representing Atlantic Canada will engage their peers on the Challenges of Farming and Lessons Learned. There will also be a NL Young Farmers banquet featuring local food.

“We are very proud of our growing Young Farmers program and the heightened interest in our leadership summit. We welcome all new farmers and those interested in starting a farm from around the province to attend.”

     - Colin Carroll, General Manager, Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture (NLFA).

“Young farmers right across Canada are passionate about feeding their communities, and the world, and they’re helping to drive the sector forward by adopting more sustainable practices. Events like the NL Young Farmers Leadership Summit are an opportunity for them to grow their networks, share their perspectives and experiences, and hear from leaders in industry and government. I hope all of the delegates have a wonderful time at this year’s Summit!”

     - The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food

“I am always impressed and heartened by the enthusiasm, skills, and fresh ideas young farmers bring to our province’s agriculture industry. Together, we are increasing access to good food and supporting the well-being of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Thank you to the NL Young Farmers, and to the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture, for your important contributions to our agriculture sector.”

     - Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“The Provincial Government is here to help our up-and-coming young farmers and producers grow and thrive. Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture staff will be on hand during this year’s summit to share information on business planning, crop management, access to farmland, and available funding programs, like the federal-provincial Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, and the Provincial Agrifoods Assistance Program. Please feel free to reach out to them for advice and support.”

     - Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture

NL Young Farmers represents farmers aged 18-40. The organization coordinates activities, public information seminars and workshops, and develops recruitment and promotional materials to provide enhanced services to members and raise awareness of the agriculture industry. The goal is to increase visibility of NL Young Farmers and enhance opportunities for young people in agriculture. NL Young Farmers is hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Agriculture and funded by the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP).

Sustainable CAP represents an investment of $3.5-billion over five years (2023-2028) from federal, provincial and territorial governments to strengthen the resilience, innovation and competitiveness of the agriculture and agri-food sector. This includes $1 billion in federal programs and activities and a $2.5-billion commitment that is cost-shared 60 per cent federally and 40 per cent provincially/territorially for programs that are designed and delivered by provinces and territories. Sustainable CAP provides $229,000 annually to support Newfoundland and Labrador Young Farmers activities in the province.
